Idina Menzel: Live Barefoot at the Symphony

Tony Award-winning actress and Glee star, Idina Menzel, releases a companion CD to coincide with her forthcoming PBS special, Indina Menzel Live: Barefoot at the Symphony.

The CD, and the special, are named for Menzel’s recent epiphany that she likes to perform barefoot. “When you are singing songs like ‘Defying Gravity’ you can get swept away, but my bare feet make me feel more grounded,” explains Menzel.

The CD features performances from the tail-end of here recent tour captured in Toronto in November. Menzel performs with a 52 piece Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Marvin Hamlisch and accompanied by her music director and pianist, Rob Mounsey.

The album features revamped versions of memorable broadway hits, including a clever mash up of Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale” with Sting’s classic “Roxanne.” Also included are memorable versions of Barbara Streisand’s “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and a surprising rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.”

Now that the album and PBS special are done, Menzel plans on returning to Broadway for a brand new original show that she’s “not allowed” to tell us about yet. She also plans to continue her wonderful work with A Broader Way, the foundation she helped establish to help at-risk girls find outlets for self-expression through art.
