The Tragic Death of Openly Gay Rapper Kevin Fret

“Kevin Fret represented hope… a refreshing view in a music genre that is very homophobic and very machista. (He lived unapologetically open as gay. In Puerto Rico, that’s an act of resistance.” – Samy Nemir Olivares (LGBTQ+ activist)

The New York Times reports, Kevin Fret was only 24 years old when he was fatally shot in the streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico while riding a motorcycle in the early hours of Thursday, 10 January.

Labeled as Latin trap’s first openly gay pioneer by Paper Magazine, Fret was a rising star who was breaking barriers in the trap music scene by being unapologetically queer. Fret told Paper, “I’m a person that doesn’t care what anybody has to say, [now I see] young gay guys or young lesbians that are looking at me now like a role model, like wow, if he did it, and he don’t care what anybody else has to say, I can do it.”
