In an interview with The Good Place's Jameela Jamil, "Dancing With a Stranger" crooner Sam Smith came out as genderqueer and non-binary.

On Instagram's new series I Weigh Interviews, Smith opened about his body dysmorphia relating to his weight as well as his gender.

“I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality,” he said. “I’ve tried to change that into my thoughts on gender.”

The Advocate reports that Smith embraces both the non-binary and genderqueer labels, and explains it to Jamil as, “You do not identify in a gender. You are a mixture of all these different things. You are your own special creation. That is how I take it. I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between—somewhat on the spectrum.”

Smith says that he feels male or female depending on the situation, and has felt "very feminine" during sex with men.

“I’ve sometimes sat there and questioned, do I want a sex change? It’s something I still think about, but I don’t think it is (something I want).”

The 26-year-old didn't designate new pronouns in the interview, but he now hopes that talking about his identity can bring understanding for other people who are struggling with their gender.

“Self-love, I think people think it's a destination,” he said. “It’s a practice.”
