They Invented the Thing They Wanted to Be, Then Brought It to a City That Rewards Exactly That.

Delta Daggers is the new host of Rouge at the Strat — the first person to hold that room alone. What we expected was a story about a sexy show getting a shakeup. What we got was a professional singer, raised by working musicians, fifteen years in cabaret and burlesque before she ever set foot on the Strip. Rouge handed her a scripted character and she went through the script rewriting jokes until they sounded like her.

David Goldrake has been named Magician of the Year by the International Magicians Society — his second Merlin Award, and the first one given for a body of work rather than a single season. He found magic at eight, in a thimble trick printed between the comics in a German children's magazine. Luxembourg had no magic scene at all. He didn't see a live magician until he was fourteen. At eleven, having never watched a professional work, he told his parents what he was going to be.

Neither of them was handed a blueprint. Both built the thing they wanted to be before anyone showed them it could be done, and both are on Las Vegas stages tonight because of it. This city runs on people who arrive fully formed from somewhere that had no room for them.

Practical note on Goldrake: An Evening of Grand Illusion closes August 23 at The Magicians Room on the LINQ Promenade. That gives you a week and change. There is a new theatrical production in the works and he refuses to say one word about it, so this is the last look at the current show.
